Unemployment benefit

Unemployment benefit is income paid from the Unemployment Insurance Fund to insured persons who become unemployed through no fault or choice of their own. Eligibility requires that the employment ended in one of the ways listed by statute and that the premium-day conditions for the preceding period are met.

Employees dismissed without just cause, or who resigned for just cause, are covered; those who quit voluntarily or were dismissed for conduct contrary to morals and good faith are in principle excluded. The benefit period is scaled by premium days, and the amount is wage-based subject to a statutory ceiling.

Application must be made to the institution within the statutory period after termination. Incorrect termination codes reported by employers are the most common reason eligible workers are denied the benefit; corrections may be sought from the employer and the institution.
